- About Gadsby Wicks
Over 30 years ago I had a bold idea – to establish a law firm that only practised medical negligence law. A firm that delivered the focused expertise these cases demand. A firm that fought for justice, no matter someone’s financial circumstances.
Today, we are known as one of the best clinical negligence solicitors firms in England. We have represented over 5,000 claimants, recovered over £300 million in compensation, and helped families across Essex and East Anglia secure justice, answers and their financial futures.
We are Gadsby Wicks.

Our history
I launched Gadsby Wicks on 1st June 1993 alongside my founding partner Roger Wicks. We were both partners at a larger general practice, but shared a fierce conviction that to achieve the best possible results for those affected by medical negligence, we needed to lead a firm dedicated to this complex area of the law.
It was a gamble. Niche legal practices were much less common at the time, especially outside of London. But Roger and I were driven by our shared commitment to protect our clients’ interests and pursue excellence – never compromising for the sake of an easy life and never dodging a fight that needed to be fought.
We started small – just four of us in a little office in Ingatestone. But as our reputation and client list grew, so did our resolve. After 18 months, we returned to Chelmsford, where we’ve remained ever since – only with more people, more experience and more determination.
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Roger sadly passed away in 2016, but his spirit lives on in our unswerving commitment to our clients. We’ve endured countless changes to civil law, procedure and funding, from the introduction of ‘no win, no fee’ agreements to the foundation of NHS Resolution. Each time we have borne the blow, adapted, and moved forward.
With the resilience of the team around me, we have not only survived but thrived – continuing to support our clients and recover millions in compensation each year.
Today, I would confidently place us among the best medical negligence solicitors in the country, delivering the advice, service and support people need to secure the justice they deserve.

Our expertise
Our solicitors only focus on medical negligence – you will never find us working in other areas of the law. I believe that’s the only way to effectively represent clients affected by substandard medical treatment.
Since 1993, our team has established an impressive track record of handling complex clinical negligence cases. With a deep understanding across both law and medicine, we offer specific knowledge that you won’t get from a generalist law firm or personal injury lawyer – resulting in more efficient claims and better outcomes against robust medical defence organisations.
In this time, we have developed an unrivalled grasp of the legal system surrounding medical negligence claims, and built a strong network of medical and non-medical expert witnesses to support our clients’ cases. Our reputation speaks for itself – backed by decades of successful case studies and thousands of satisfied clients.
Our expertise also shows in our accreditations. We were the first firm in England to have two or more lawyers accredited as clinical negligence specialists by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).
Furthermore, four of our solicitors are accredited by The Law Society’s Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme, while I am on the Clinical Negligence Specialist Panel for the Action Against Medical Accidents (AvMA) charity.
Other accreditations we have secured include:
AvMA endorsed firm
Action Against Medical Accidents (AvMA) is a leading voice for patient safety in the UK. Being an AvMA accredited firm denotes our extensive experience representing patients in clinical negligence cases.
Member of the Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers (SCIL)
SCIL is committed to improving the management of clinical negligence claims to benefit injured individuals. Being a member of this scheme is a sign of quality and a mark of trust for our clients.
Lexcel accredited solicitors
Lexcel is an industry benchmark for care, compliance and quality management. We are proud to be described as a “Centre of Excellence”, upholding the highest standards across all areas of our field.
UKAS ISO 9001 certified
ISO 9001 is the world’s most recognised quality management system standard. By holding this certification, we maintain high-quality, consistent service at every stage of our claims process.
These accreditations and our strong reputation place us among the best medical negligence solicitors in England – producing the highest standards of case management, evidence investigation and settlement negotiations.

Our people
Gadsby Wicks started out as an idea. Ideas are easy. Execution is difficult. It takes a great team to bring that idea into a reality.
Over the past 30+ years, I have been fortunate to work alongside a varied, exceptional team of medical negligence solicitors, all of whom share my passion to secure justice for those affected by negligent care – and a relentless commitment to our clients’ wellbeing and future.
Across our team of 8 solicitors we have over 190 years of combined legal experience, with my fellow Partners Tami Frankel, Tony Mitty, Alan Mendham and Corrina Mottram providing the bulk of that expertise.
Our remarkable collection of medical negligence experts is backed by an equally talented team of nurse advisers who act as the first point of contact for new and ongoing clients, and paralegals and administrative assistants who assist with case preparation and management.
Over the years I have expanded our team to meet the ever-growing volume of medical negligence claims. Yet, I have ensured we never grow beyond the point we fail to deliver our personalised, focused level of client service – something larger firms struggle to provide.
Hard-working, enthusiastic, inquisitive, compassionate – I am hugely proud of the team we have assembled, and am confident we offer one of, if not the most comprehensive service in all aspects of medical negligence law.

Our purpose
Medical negligence changes lives, but it doesn’t need to define them. Our purpose is to help those affected by substandard treatment get the answers they need to find closure, and recover the compensation needed to maintain the best possible quality of life post-negligence.
It’s not just about winning a case and getting a fee for us. We examine every piece of evidence, engage the right experts and resolutely negotiate to ensure our clients receive a settlement that will support them for the rest of their lives – from ongoing treatments, aids and equipment, to care costs and home adaptations.
But we care about more than compensation. Through in-depth investigation, we provide explanations that help our clients and their loved ones get peace of mind and move on from what happened to them.
Our claims have also been the catalysts for internal investigations and reforms that have improved healthcare standards, raising awareness and helping prevent the same mistakes from happening to others in the future.
We are not ambulance chasers. We are not parasites. We fight for the rights of the injured, hold doctors and hospitals accountable for mistakes, and help individuals and families navigate life after medical negligence. That is why we do what we do, and do it to the best of our abilities.

Our success
While no-one can undo the emotional or physical harm caused by medical negligence, we pride ourselves in achieving results that secure people’s futures.
As we exclusively specialise in clinical negligence cases, our claims process is specifically tailored for these unique, often-complex claims. This helps ensure an efficient, comprehensive and personalised service – something only a true specialist can deliver.
Since 1993, we have worked with over 5,000 claimants and recovered over £300 million in compensation, with standout cases including:
- £26 million for baby born with Cerebral Palsy after delayed treatment
- £400,000 for misdiagnosis of breast cancer
- £200,000 for misdiagnosis of bowel cancer
- £180,000 for injuries sustained during gallbladder surgery
- £150,000 for delayed treatment of an aortic aneurysm
- £130,000 for errors during knee surgery
Furthermore, with 96% of claims settled outside of court, we are experts at resolving disputes without the stress of a court hearing. And, in the rare instances a case proceeds to trial, our strong relationships with experienced barristers ensure our clients are well represented in any circumstances.
I’m immensely proud of our reputation and track record – a testament to the people we have supported through one of the toughest experiences of their lives.

Our podcast
In 2024 I launched Medical Negligence Matters – the podcast series that guides you through the complexities of medical negligence law.
I started this separate venture as I know there’s a lot of misinformation surrounding medical negligence online and in the media. It’s a complex area of the law, and one people don’t really think about unless it impacts your life – so it’s vital there’s an accurate source when people have questions that need answers.
I wanted to set the record straight and share the insight I’ve gained over 35+ years as a solicitor. Joined by expert guests, we cover the topics that matter in a natural, conversational format – from the process of making a medical negligence claim, to debunking common myths and deep dives on birth injuries, misdiagnosis, surgical errors and more.
Available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts, Medical Negligence Matters is my passion project to make medical negligence more accessible and digestible to everyone.
