Perforation of common bile duct – £90,000

Mrs Carter underwent chemotherapy for a tumour on the wall of her bladder in 2004, followed by surgery. Four and a half years later, she was experiencing recurrent urinary tract infections. Her GP referred her back to see the consultant who recommended ureteric stenting. During the operation, the surgeon accidentally punctured her bile duct. Despite attempts to repair the leak, Mrs Carter subsequently developed acute pancreatitis and biliary sepsis and sadly died in the Intensive Care Unit.
