Medical Negligence Solicitor

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences, Queen Mary University

Seeing the difference that financial compensation can make to someone who is injured is a particularly rewarding part of my job. Having an acknowledgement that something went wrong during their treatment can really help them start to come to terms with what happened.

Elliot Clarke

Why did you become a medical negligence solicitor?

Following my work experience at Plexus Law and pupillage at 18 Red Lion Chambers, my interest in learning about medical accidents and the situations that caused them grew significantly.

Inspired by the courage of patients who have overcome the adversity of negligent treatment, as well as my years helping out at a local special school in Cardiff during my holidays, I switched my focus to becoming a claimant lawyer.

What is your legal background?

Upon obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences from Queen Mary University in London, I started training towards qualification as a solicitor at large East Anglian firm Ashtons Legal between 2014-2016. While there, I was lucky enough to do an extended seat in clinical negligence law.

Once I qualified, I was able to secure a position at Gadsby Wicks Solicitors in January 2017, and have been part of the firm ever since.

What motivated you to join Gadsby Wicks?

At my previous firm, it was no secret that Gadsby Wicks had an outstanding reputation. It was considered a ‘unicorn’ due to their history of tenacious litigation and excellent results for their clients. They are the standout name in the region for clinical negligence, and are hugely respected among barristers, solicitors and further legal experts.

Having been here since 2017, I can confidently say that this reputation is well-founded. The systems in place are uniquely suited for clinical negligence work, and our partners share a raft of specialist knowledge and experience across every type of medical negligence claim.

What are your responsibilities at Gadsby Wicks?

My primary responsibility is to manage my caseload, subject to our firm’s supervision processes. This involves the day-to-day management and progression of over 40 claims – all presenting unique challenges and opportunities.

My days typically involve meeting with and/or speaking to a variety of clients, reviewing materials such as medical records and expert reports, drafting statements and various Court documents, and negotiating with Defendant representatives.

What do you find fulfilling about your role?

I am fascinated by the puzzle that medical negligence claims present. From the moment I take on a new client, establishing what happened, why it happened, whether it was negligent and how we can prove this in the eyes of the law provides an excellent challenge.

The opportunity to intertwine my long-term interest in medicine within the scope of this legal process to establish a claim is something I have always found both rewarding and absorbing.

Furthermore, I have driven by achieving the best result possible for my clients. Often claimants reach us feeling lost and searching for answers. I take pride in deciphering medical records and obtaining expert advice to provide them with these answers, even if it then proceeds to a claim. Being able to make an active difference in a person’s life is very fulfilling.

What are some of your career highlights or standout cases?

I have been proud to support many clients in their pursuit of the compensation, answers and justice they deserve. Some of the most notable cases of my career so far include:
