The care of the elderly in the NHS has been roundly criticised by a report prepared by the Health Service Ombudsman.
The report focused on the nursing care received by 10 patients, but the Ombudsman says that they are by no means isolated cases. She states that of the 9,000 complaints that her office receives each year, 18% relate to the care of the elderly and, of those cases that require a full investigation, the number involving the care of the elderly is double that of all other age groups combined.
The report says that the NHS is failing to provide “even the most basic standards of care” and makes for disturbing reading for patients and their families.
